Fort Myers Beach, FL—A beloved 97-year-old bartender at the famous Hurricane Tina’s Bar was assaulted by a drunk customer, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies reported that an intoxicated woman punched Betty Kai, affectionately known as "Betty Boop," during an altercation inside Hurricane Tina’s Bar on San Carlos Blvd. just after noon on Thursday, July 18.
The incident began when the woman, Sarah Lucille Powell, 24, of Punta Gorda, claimed to be the bar owner’s sister. Kai, who has been a fixture at the bar for decades, refused to serve her another drink. Powell then became aggressive, grabbing Kai's arm and striking her in the face with a closed fist.
According to witnesses, several patrons quickly intervened, pulling Powell away from Kai and escorting her outside. Powell described as a short, heavy-set Hispanic woman with frizzy black hair and a large chest tattoo, fled on foot but was later located and arrested by deputies.
Powell now faces multiple charges, including battery on a person 65 years of age or older, battery on an officer, resisting an officer, and providing a false ID to an officer. These charges carry a bond of $12,250.
Kai sustained multiple lacerations on her forearm and a red, swollen cheek. Lee County EMS treated her injuries on-site, but she declined further medical treatment. "I intend to press charges," Kai stated firmly to deputies. Surveillance footage of the incident was collected as evidence.
Betty Kai has been a cherished figure in Fort Myers Beach for decades. Known for her lively personality and dedication to her work, she has been bartending since 1962. Despite her age, she continues to work tirelessly. "Hostess at night, bartender in the day," Kai said, adding that she works at the Bel Air Beach Club and is an office manager.
Kai’s commitment to her work and community is well-known. "I’ve married probably close to 300, 400 people in 35 years," she proudly mentioned. Her relentless work ethic and vibrant social life have made her an icon on Fort Myers Beach.
"She goes out more than we all go out," said Tina Tomasino, owner of Hurricane Tina’s. Tomasino praised Kai's remarkable memory and energy. "She remembers more people’s names than we all do," she said.
When asked why she continues to work at 97, Kai's response was straightforward: "Can’t just sit around on your butt." She believes that staying busy is the key to her longevity and vitality.
Kai’s indomitable spirit and dedication to her community have earned her a special place in the hearts of many. "She loves it. She wants to. I think that if she stopped, that’s when she would probably feel her age," Tomasino said.
The incident at Hurricane Tina’s has shocked many of the bar’s regulars, who regard Kai as family. "Everyone knows and loves her," said one patron. The community has rallied around Kai, expressing their support and outrage over the assault.
“That piece of shit shouldn't make it out of the Marceno Motel in one piece,” said another FMB denizen who did not wish to be identified, referring to the suspect.
As the legal process unfolds, Kai remains determined to continue her work and maintain her active lifestyle. Her resilience in the face of adversity has only strengthened the admiration and respect she commands within the community.
Hurricane Tina’s Bar, a popular spot on San Carlos Blvd., continues to operate as usual. Kai is behind the bar, serving drinks and sharing stories with patrons. The establishment has increased security measures to ensure the safety of its staff and customers.
