NYU EMS Scandal: Powell's Personal Perks Prompt Probe!
NYU Langone’s EMS Director Mitch Powell Faces Intensified Scrutiny Over Ethical Concerns
By Frankie Pressman with Dick LaFontaine and Richard Luthmann
Mitch Powell, the EMS Director at NYU Langone Hospital, is at the center of a growing controversy involving questionable dealings and personal enrichment. There are claims that Powell even lied to Billionaire Philanthropist and Home Depot Founder Ken Langone’s face.
Powell and NYU Langone Medical Center’s EMS Department’s troubles are exacerbated by the hospital’s reluctance to address inquiries from investigative journalists from this outlet, led by Frankie Pressman.
The Staten Island garage facility, used unofficially by NYU Langone to service both Brooklyn and Manhattan, has become a focal point of allegations against Powell. Sources have revealed that Powell arranged an informal, non-contractual use of the garage operated by C & M Truck Repair.
The owner, Carmine Vigliarolo, reportedly assured Powell that NYU Langone’s vehicles, including a John Deere Gator, would be “safe here” under a handshake agreement, raising questions about the transparency and accountability of such arrangements.
Furthermore, it has come to light that Powell’s personal vehicles receive maintenance at the same facility, suggesting a potential misuse of his position for personal benefits.
Powell walked around NYU Langone Medical Center this past week with the “receipt” for his personal vehicle. It never dawned upon the dolt that the proof of sale cemented his personal conflicts with NYU Langone contractors. Powell’s improper relationship with ProLiner, a company tasked with outfitting NYU Langone’s EMS vehicles, is clear.
There is further speculation that Powell used his influence to secure personal vehicle upgrades from ProLiner, mirroring the hospital’s procurement processes for EMS supervisors' SUVs.
Amid these allegations, investigative journalists Frankie Pressman and Dick LaFontaine have made multiple attempts to shed light on Powell’s conduct through inquiries directed at NYU Langone’s Media Relations Department. However, their questions have consistently gone unanswered, pointing to a possible evasion by the hospital’s administration in addressing these critical issues. Are they circling the wagons to protect Mitch Powell’s malfeasance?
Pressman and LaFontaine’s persistent inquiries focus on the lack of formal agreements for the use of the Staten Island garage and the details surrounding Powell’s dealings with C & M Truck Repair and ProLiner. Their efforts to clarify whether hospital resources were used for Powell’s personal gain have been met with silence, deepening concerns about the hospital’s commitment to transparency.
One of the reasons NYU Langone Medical Center is one of the world’s elite hospitals is its commitment to data transparency. As stated in a 2017 article in Strategy + Business:
“Pursuing data transparency not only gave people a greater understanding of their own role in the larger [NYU Langone] enterprise but also signaled a commitment to meritocracy and demonstrated results.”
Where is the meritocracy in the NYU Langone EMS Department? The ongoing lack of response from NYU Langone’s Media Relations Department fuels suspicion and undermines trust in the institution’s governance and its adherence to transparency and ethical standards.
As the hospital faces increasing pressure to address these allegations, the integrity of its EMS operations and its leadership under Mitch Powell are under significant scrutiny. The public deserves clear answers from NYU Langone Medical Center if it expects to remain a venerated, trusted, and world-class institution.
I've know Mitch Powell for nearly 35 years. We were EMS partners for most of them. You will not find a man with more integrity, personal and business integrity, and intelligence to his trade. Well respected among his peers as a family 1st man and the same goes with his wife and children.
MANY of our co-workers including Mitch, LONG before he became to be boss @NYU Langone Medical Center, have used C&M Truck repair for our personal vehicle for decades. Carmine and his family who operate this repair shop are "family" to so many EMS workers because of their extremely reliable work, honest and fair prices, and the way we in return are treated as family. I consider the entire Vigliarolo family and Mitch longtime close friends and of course find this article unfair, appalling , and most of all untrue! Your poll at the end of this article proves such.
With all the nonsense going on in this world today THIS is your focus? Sounds to me, a recently retired EMS Paramedic of 40 yrs serving the City of New York and giving the best care possible to our community, as Mitch always has, that this article stems from a bad seed within the EMS community who needed a pee pee smack for not doing his job.
Through all his trials and faults and whatever else have you, I have always been an advocate for Richard Luthmann and consider myself a fair and reasonably honest and decent man and I am requesting him and the writers of this article, give Mitch a better shake than this. He is totally deserving of it.
Thank You, Sincerely
